Academic Pricing

Micro Focus has a number of Academic Programs available to Eligible Academic Customers. In summary these are:

  • SLA – Schools License Agreement – A subscription license including upgrade protection but no support
  • ALA – Academic License Agreement (for Higher Education) – A subscription license including upgrade protection but no support
  • Academic Single Order (ASO) Subscription Licensing with no contract, including upgrade protection and support for the term of the subscription
  • Academic Single Order (ASO) Perpetual Licensing with no contract, including upgrade protection and support whilst maintenance is paid
  • ACA/MLA – Academic Master License – special contract for large customers

In most cases you cannot mix licensing models within your academic site. You cannot purchase under the SLA for example and then purchase a small number of perpetual licenses to obtain support.

It is important to read and understand the benefits of each of the license programs. Some allow you to purchase based on numbers of one type of user and then allow other users to make use of the software free of charge. Some could count Full Time Equivalent Staff and allow students to use the software free. Per user licensing, per FTE licensing, per enrollment licensing and per FTES licensing are not the same so it is important to carefully consider which is best in your situation both from a cost effective and a utility point of view.

An overview of the Academic Programs can be found in the Academic Program Guide.

What products are available for each license type?

The SLA and ALA licenses are currently limited to a certain number of products. These can be viewed on the SLA and ALA worksheets along with the unit costs. The prices for SLA and ALA products can only be found on the worksheets and are not included in the price lists mentioned below.

Academic discount pricing for Subscription and Perpetual licenses is available for most of the OpenText products and can be reviewed on the appropriate regional price list. These price lists include the standard academic discounts for the region although it should be noted that additional discounts may be possible for large purchases – something which can be discussed with your sales person. Note that you must purchase using the price list for the region in which your academic site is based. Also note that purchasing maintenance at 22.5% of the purchase cost is compulsory in the first year when purchasing perpetual licenses.

Price Lists

Please note that these price lists are confidential to TTP members and should not be downloaded for others outside of the TTP Group – their use is covered by the NDA Agreement you signed when joining the TTP.

Paperwork and contracts

To purchase under the SLA or the ALA the customer must complete and return an SLA or ALA Contract. Click here for SLA or here for ALA contracts.

Each SLA or ALA order must be accompanied by a completed SLA or ALA worksheet. Click here for SLA or here for ALA worksheets.

The SLA and ALA worksheet become your formal record of the documents you have used to calculate your numbers from the previous academic year.

For ASO type licensing you simply need to order the product as there is no contract. The only point to note here is that if you order based on FTES numbers then you need to specify on the purchase order the exact details of the publication from the previous academic year that you have used to determine these numbers.

Need help?

The first question most academics are going to ask is how much will it cost. You should be able to get a self-help answer to this from the links above. However, do get involved with your preferred sales person as there may be promotions and other things that can be done to enhance this cost. Do look at all of the options as there is no model that fits all here. If you have any questions you are finding it difficult to get answers to then please email me – Peter Atkins – using patkins@microfocus.com and I will be more than happy to help.
